ABSTRACT

Among the population of 7 million in Hong Kong, around 1,000 suicide deaths occur annually, ranging from 799 in 1995 to 996 in 2006, with a peak of 1,264 in 2003. The average rate in 2005 was 14.6 suicide deaths per 100,000 individuals, which is slightly higher than the global average rate (Yip, Liu, Law, & Law, 2005; Yip & Lee, 2007). Following the suggestion proposed by Shneidman (1972) that there are 6 survivors for each suicide death, about 6,000 suicide survivors in 2005 were within Hong Kong.
