ABSTRACT

The information society is a complex phenomenon. It did not emerge overnight; it has it been with us in different parts of the world for no longer than two decades. We need to attempt to explain it. The purpose of this chapter is to account for its following phenomena: (a) transformations, (b) engagement(s) and (c) unintended consequences as presented in Chapter 1. In describing these phenomena, we will revisit a number of challenges for information systems practice so that readers could gain a better appreciation of the things they have to deal with when engaging with information society initiatives, plans or projects.
