ABSTRACT

Professional knowledge is learned in undergraduate and graduate programs. As part of that education, exposure to work and community settings through internships and service learning enables students to learn from experience within applied settings. These practices of teaching the content of a field and encouraging exposure to practice in the field as part of professional education assume a process of learning about professional organizations and the norms of the profession. Beginning professionals, along with their professors in higher education and mentors in professional organizations, make implicit assumptions about practice and what forms of practice and action are thought to be best practices. Application of content knowledge in action situations is an instrumental form of actionable knowledge.
