ABSTRACT

Education abroad off ers an ideal setting for students’ signifi cant learning and development because they encounter new places and people, take in new ideas and information, test themselves, and, in the process, discover something new about themselves and their potential. The holistic model of education abroad capitalizes on the richness of this setting and students’ openness to new experiences to develop their intellectual and social lives in an international context. Premised on the theory of intentional program design to create meaningful educational opportunities, this model sees the classroom and community as contiguous spaces in the learning environment and asks students to share this vision. The goal to expand students’ global perspective is embedded in such a model through cultural integration, and students’ adaptation is supported in the program details.
