ABSTRACT

Fan Tan, the simplest game of the “Pope Joan,” or “Stops” family, is somewhat unfortunately named, as it is apt to be confused with Chinese Fan Tan, an illegal gambling game that now and then achieves an unenviable notoriety by being dragged into the police courts. The game with which we are now dealing is perfectly innocuous, and is well suited to the family circle. Its old name was “Play or Pay,” and there seems to be no reason why this should not be re-assumed.
