ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to contribute to recent sociological debates about gendered identity constructions and formations, and gendered and sexual citizenship, by exploring citizenship debates within the context of the gender transformations of trans women and men. “Transgender” is an umbrella term, which includes transgender, transsexual, bigendered, and intersex people, transvestites, cross-dressers, and drag kings and queens. “Transsexual” refers to people who change their anatomical sex through hormones and/or surgery. In this study, the terms “trans” and “transgender” apply to individuals who have changed their bodies through the use of hormones and/or surgery as well as those who have not.
