ABSTRACT

The intuitionism that I defended in Chapter 4 is a moral epistemology based on the status of certain moral truths as synthetic truths stating the relationship of necessitation between certain states of affairs and the property of being reason-giving. These truths can be known directly, i.e., without inference from other, more basic truths. If one grasps the nature of the relevant state of affairs, one can-but may not-thereby grasp that that state of affairs is reason-giving for some individual.
