ABSTRACT

Dr. Saër Maty Bâ holds an MA in English and Wolof (Cheikh Anta Diop University, Senegal), an M.Phil. in American Cultural Studies (2002), and a Ph.D. in Film Studies (Documentary) (2006) from the University of Exeter. His research interests blur boundaries between black diaspora, fi lm, media, and cultural studies and include visual and sonic cultures of the “Black Atlantic,” cinema history, “intertexts” (across cultures and “national” cinemas), and the theory and practice of fi lm representation. Prior to joining St Andrews in 2008, he held research fellowships in media fi lm studies at the University of East London (2006-2007) and the National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries, Bangor University (2007-2008). His past and recent publications include “Visualising Rhythm, Transforming Relationship: Jazz and Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993),” and “Gathering Dust in the Wind: Memory and the ‘Real’ in Rithy Panh’s S21 (France: INA, Arté France, 2002)”.
