ABSTRACT

Imagine a teacher planning a lesson using the task shown in Figure 21.1 from the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) (Lappan, Fey, Fitzgerald, Friel, & Phillips, 1998a), a curriculum development project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). How might teachers apply their knowledge of mathematics in planning and implementing the task? What questions and expectations would teachers have about students’ knowledge and understandings? What instructional strategies might teachers consider? How do external standards and policies (e.g., district-or state-level learning expectations) influence the teacher’s work with this lesson?
