ABSTRACT

Issues relating to the links between home and school have been debated for a very long time, but it is during the last three decades that the role and influence of parents (or their caretakers) in the education of their children have become a particular focus for concern. The burgeoning literature on parental participation in education, the attention given to the home in governmental reports on education published during this period, and various legislative measures have all shown an increasing recognition of first, the importance of the role of home and family in the educational process; second, parental rights; and third, the need for the influence of parents to be made effective through real power.
