ABSTRACT

This chapter contains discussions that focus on programs and techniques designed to teach older ESL students to read. The teaching of students in grades 4 through 8, intermediate students, is discussed first. Programs for secondary and adult students follow. The recommended practices and approaches are based on the notion that the instruction of ESL (ELL) students should involve comprehensible input selected relative to their English proficiency and their L1 literacy background. It also recommends activities that involve students in active participation in activities based on knowledge of their backgrounds.
