ABSTRACT

Until a few years ago stage combat had been an inexact practice handled by just about anyone who felt qualified for the job; however. many were not. Professional and university productions were often staged by local fencing coaches, who had little or no knowledge of the essence of theatre. Fights were generally an incoherent compilation of moves drawn from sport fencing, awkward in the hands of the actor and incomprehensible to the audience.
