ABSTRACT

This chapter draws upon research undertaken to examine the types of employability initiatives being delivered across the UK and Europe. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques, the research explores the types of initiative on offer, the range of organisations that are providing employability initiatives, barriers to provision and good practice within existing provision. The research finds that a combination of wellstructured work experience, combined with positive employer participation and on-site accreditation of prior learning, is necessary for maximising refugees’ chances of employment. It highlights the difficulties that organisations in the UK experience in delivering employability support, given the lack of core funding for these activities and the pressures they experience dealing with refugees’ other concerns, including accessing housing and appropriate English-language training.
