ABSTRACT

This research analyzes labor trends in the post-apartheid reconstruction under a neo-liberal economic development paradigm. It also assesses the extent to which neo-liberalism undermines economic redistribution and its globalization imperative provides new lenses for analyzing the gold mining industry and the effect it has had in the post-apartheid South Africa. This is important because the gold mining industry has reaped the benefits of exceptional entitlement to its operating procedures that were not extended to any other industry. This reality has made it one of the most vulnerable industries once the political system changed. Conversely, it has also presented new opportunities for the industry to conduct its business differently.
