ABSTRACT
In 1949 the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) was organized by the Navy to operate cargo ships, tankers, and transports. In 1950, MSTS took over operation of the ships operated by the Army. All these were civilian manned and carried the prefix USNS (U.S. Naval Ship) instead of USS; they were not commissioned naval vessels.
