ABSTRACT
The U.S. Navy operated tugs for service in Navy yards and fleet bases. The AT series was divided into three groups on 15 May 1944 ATF (fleet), ATO (old), and ATA (auxiliary). The unnamed rescue tugs (ATR) were a separate series. Tugs were given American Indian names—either tribes or great chiefs.
