ABSTRACT

Most people find computers an infuriating but necessary part of daily life. However, they get very annoyed with them when they fail to perform logically. Performing logically is the only thing computers are capable of – the problem is that computers and people have different concepts of logic. Strong fantasy characterisations are required together with the ability to maintain the character. In order to conserve memory space the script will be recorded in as few sentences as possible so recurring phrases may well be recorded only once, with different inflections on the last word to cover both triumph and disaster. Continuity scripts used to be rather formal in style. The formality is now mixed with a lighter more entertaining approach. Certain news items – the death of a monarch for example – can only be broadcast in the most formal of tones and such announcements will only be made by the senior announcer of each network.
