ABSTRACT

Voice artists are not expected to understand how a studio works, but a general understanding of the principles and practice of recording will make for a better relationship with the studio engineer. The level of knowledge required is rather like that needed to drive a car. The operation of a modern studio is often referred to as ‘driving’. The largest and most comfortable chair in any studio is inevitably occupied by the engineer who operates the recording equipment. The voice-over booth is where the voice-over artist sits or stands to make the recording. They can vary in size from being large enough to accommodate only one person at a time to those designed for two or three people. Some are bought as prefabricated units, while others are converted cupboards or rooms in the building housing the studio. Because the microphones are so sensitive they can pick up the sounds made by clothing, jewelry and watches.
