ABSTRACT

Assessment is a challenging part of your professional role. Provided you are prepared to grapple with it, and don’t simply try to find the easiest way round it, it pays dividends in terms of your developing professionalism as a teacher of RE. But it is a complex area. Assessment is not an exact science and only certain things can be professionally assessed in schools. Unfortunately the culture of regarding assessment as testing pupils’ powers of recall is deeply and traditionally ingrained in our schools, in examinations, and especially in the expectations of many of our pupils and their parents. We need to stand a long way back from this approach and take stock of what we really ought to be trying to do.
