ABSTRACT

Live electronic music performance on various devices with all manner of interfaces has a strong, if not well-known, history and is increasingly popular among younger people, especially in dance and experimental music settings. This chapter will discuss the operation and performance potential of electronic music devices including laptops, turntables, beat boxes, signal processors, and various electronic devices including stomp-boxes, and toys. The field of live electronic music provides rich opportunities for music education. It is a practice at the crossroads of many important considerations; its connection with popular culture motivates students, its emphasis on performance gives it a connection to the embodied nature of musical experience, and its focus on experimentation provides opportunities for creative expression and the fostering of an enquiring attitude.
