ABSTRACT

The final chapter encompasses two elements of teaching history which are not part of the competences outlined in the Standards for QTS (TDA, 2007) which define the capabilities that student teachers must possess if they are to be granted Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The first is the question of applying for your first post in teaching. It is important to realise that effective preparation for this is a separate area of competence. There is no necessary correlation between teachers’ classroom teaching abilities and their skills in self-promotion and preparation for job applications. There are many excellent teachers and student teachers who do not do themselves justice in terms of job applications because they have not applied the same degree of thought and rigour to the process of application as to their classroom competence in teaching history.
