ABSTRACT
Broadcasting has been defined as fundamentally part of the public sphere in ways that theater and movies had not. Its public service obligation and the news and public service programming that arose from it framed broadcasting from the beginning as a technological extension of the newspaper in its role in the public sphere. Newspapers were essential to preparing the ground for this, so a brief history of the press will be helpful as background.
