ABSTRACT
Music produced by the human voice or by a one-line instrument (such as the trumpet or flute) is melodic — that is, note following note, one note at a time. Melody is also referred to as the horizontal component of music. In the study and practice of music it is frequently necessary to express the distance between two pitches. This distance is expressed as an interval.
