ABSTRACT
Bhagvan Das Mishra is one of many musicians from Benares who live and work in Lucknow while their families remain in Benares and their children grow up there. Most belong to the kathak community, whose members have historically been dancers (of the classical North Indian dance form kathak) as well as instrumentalists and singers. In Bhagvan Das’s family, sarangi and tabla players predominate, and dancing has not been practiced for some generations.
