Developing Reading and Thinking Skills in Content Areas

This chapter presents an instructional program for teaching reading and thinking skills as an integrated part of the various academic subjects taught in our schools. The program is fully explicated in two editions of the text Teaching Reading in Content Areas (Herber, 1970, 1978). This paper describes the instruction provided in the program, its theoretical base, and its implementation in school settings—including populations worked with, assessment measures used, data collected, and evaluation problems.
