ABSTRACT
The origin of the Portuguese inflected infinitive has been a popular topic studied by many Romance linguists. No other major Romance language shows a widespread use and distribution of the infinitive with verbal inflection. The inflected infinitive is a conspicuous feature of Portuguese which was considered unique to this language, but does in fact exist in other non-major Romance languages. Typical Portuguese examples, not unlike those shown earlier, are the following.
