ABSTRACT

Important shifts in taste and tradition in fashion and ballet from the 1780s to the 1830s influenced the way women and dancers were perceived and had profound consequences on how they lived their lives, especially for ballerinas during the 1830s in Paris and London. Ballet dancers were poorly paid, forced to train in unhealthy ways, and were therefore at risk for prostitution and serious problems.
