ABSTRACT

I cannot leave this introduction without adding that kodae sosol were written to give pleasure, and that they can still give pleasure. The fact that one dull book can be written about them should not discourage anyone else from picking up one or two and reading them. One aim of this dull catalogue of titles is to make it more widely known what there is to be read. It is hoped that those who can read them will do so, and perhaps even agree that they ought to be made easier, by reprinting, annotation or translation, for others to read.
