ABSTRACT

In fifteenth century China (Ming,Ch'eng-hua), two lovers are parted, die, and meet again in their next lives. Kim T'aejun, 220-223, gives the origin of the story in a Chinese legend, and points out the changes made for the novel. He states that the legend appeared under the title ~W1sllttt Liang Shan-po PaoChuan "The Precious Book on Liang Shan-po", in Ming times, and under the title ~R&: Pang-yu-chi, "Record of Searching out a Friend", in Ch'ing times, and that it is also known under the titles .mws [1'] Yang Shan-po chuan or Yang Sanbaek ch6n, "The story of Yang Shan-po",and ®t:~§ [1'] Chu Ying-t'ai chuan or Ch'u Yongdae chon, "The story of Chu Ying-t'ai" (she is the heroine).
