ABSTRACT

Bruce Springsteen’s six-night run at the Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey’s Meadowlands Sports complex played to more than 120,000 people, two or three times the capacity of Giants Stadium next door. But even that number was dwarfed by the demand. Tickets for the Jersey shows were sold by mail, and when the first day’s orders arrived, Meadowlands general manager Loris Smith reported, there were enough requests for twenty-two shows. And because the shows would also mark the new arena’s inauguration, there was a full complement of political brass squabbling for seats; Springsteen’s associates prevailed over the promoters, and the public won that round.
