ABSTRACT

Glory Days is a book with a bunch of endings. In my favorite, Bruce Springsteen, who has just returned from France for the release of his five-record Live 1975–1985 album, appears in the guise of the protagonist of Joni Mitchell’s “A Free Man in Paris”: “You know I’d go back there tomorrow/But for the work I’ve taken on/Stoking the star maker machinery/Behind the popular song.”
