ABSTRACT
From the beginning, rock stood outside the entertainment establishment, not entirely as a matter of choice. When Sam Phillips and Elvis Presley were in Memphis inventing the grandest music of the Fifties, they certainly did not view themselves as outlaws. But to the entertainment establishment—the world of big-dollar television, motion pictures and nightclubs—rock was nothing more than a particularly belligerent and queerly persistent fad.
