ABSTRACT
Few educational issues are as controversial as bilingual education. In fact, in recent years there has been a national debate on the topic in the many Western countries, not only in the United States. In this chapter, I will discuss briefly the debate over bilingual education in the United States, first in the media and the public arena, and then in the domain of scientific investigations aimed at assessing the effectiveness of bilingual education.
