ABSTRACT

Jerry Herman was convinced by frequent collaborator Michael Stewart, along with coauthor Mark Bramble, into undertaking this musical retelling of the 1944 comedy Jocobowsky and the Colonel by Franz Werfel. When the show underwent the usual birth pangs out-of-town, the lack of a strong, guiding hand at the top tipped the balance of power from the producer and director to the show's star, Joel Grey. By the time it had reached New York, The Grand Tour became more of a star vehicle than a well-integrated musical.
