ABSTRACT

Realizing what was expected of him by audiences and acknowledging the critical receptions of his more adventurous pieces, Jerry Herman came up with a plan to have his cake and eat it too. Along with librettist Harvey Fierstein, Jerry undertook the task of musicalizing the popular French play by Jean Poiret, La Cage Aux Folles. With equal doses of Broadway splash and political astuteness, La Cage Aux Folles achieved the miracle of succeeding on both fronts.
