ABSTRACT
Virtually all of Beethoven’s early music was written for the piano, alone or with other instruments. Upon arriving in Vienna in 1792 he devoted himself largely to genres that would show off his capabilities as a performing artist: piano sonatas, concertos, and variation sets, trios, and sonatas with an obbligato cello or violin part (works we now call “cello sonatas” and “violin sonatas”).
