ABSTRACT

Dealing with social events Social events can be very difficult for those with anorexia nervosa. Often, sufferers have missed out on the normal adolescent stages of social development because of their illness. Start with an event which is relatively non-threatening. Remember you cannot force socialisation and that too much pressure is counterproductive. Stick to gentle encouragement. If it is your partner who has anorexia nervosa, it is important that you do not let your own social life die. As a parent, it may seem inappropriate to still have a hand in arranging your child's social life. However, you may need to break the ice by arranging for old friends to call in and perhaps participate in family outings.
