ABSTRACT
The experts trained and experienced in risk assessment are not always successful in communicating with the general public about how they assess health and safety risks and how their findings should be interpreted. And the risk managers who base their decisions on the experts' advice sometimes fail to convince the public that risks can be kept to acceptable levels. Lessons from the arenas of toxic waste disposal and nuclear power plant safety bear witness to these facts.
