ABSTRACT
The Athenian presence in the Chersonese peninsula (modern Gallipoli) dated to the reign of the tyrant Peisistratus (Herodotus 6.34-39). The Chersonese owed its importance to its command of the Hellespont, through which merchant fleets transported grain from the Black Sea to Athens.
