ABSTRACT
Latin America has never figured prominently in the scholarly literature on new religious movements (NRMs) or related phenomena worldwide. The ubiquitous Roman Catholic presence in the region during the five centuries following the sixteenth-century conquest of the New World by Spanish and Portuguese colonial powers was a formidable obstacle for newer religions to overcome. Even so, Latin American religious culture has been more diversified than it might appear at first sight.
