ABSTRACT

Quite often we’ll assume that as we discover newer, faster, and better ICTs, we’ll automatically want to adopt those technologies. What’s forgotten in this diffusion-adoption-curve assumption is that sometimes it works in reverse: people will abandon state-of-the-art ICTs because they no longer serve their purpose. These people aren’t Luddites. No, they simply believe that ICTs ought to enhance, not hinder, communication efforts. They change ICT’s for functional and symbolic reasons.
