ABSTRACT

This book has focused attention on the relationship between housing and access to opportunities. As was discussed in earlier chapters, housing is the central determinant of access to good jobs, quality schools, vibrant and safe communities, and healthy, appreciating property values. As a result, enforcing fair housing and fair lending laws is one of the most direct means to improve access to opportunities and, by extension, economic and social mobility in America. In the introduction to this book we argue that the first step to improve enforcement of fair housing-related mandates is to convince policy makers and the public of the value of this pursuit.
