ABSTRACT
It would be hard for us to imagine a university today that was not organized by disciplines and some arrangement of schools, faculties and departments. The division of knowledge and underlying epistemologies into defined disciplinary regimes is seemingly part and parcel of the post-industrial western university. We cannot think of it being any other way. How would we possibly manage the numbers of students we have and the need to have individuals with specialized knowledge? These may well be real questions, but the role of university education within society (not just for those participating in it) also needs to be continually examined.
