ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the stories of three “third generation” athletes-two elite and one non-elite-whose lives have been touched by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) wheelchair-basketball program. The themes of familial support, the influence of mentors and role models, and the self-empowering benefits of institutional opportunities to play competitive sports are reiterated here, along with the disgruntlement that is characteristic of divisions within the disability community.
