The score was tied as the red-haired youth received the inbound pass with just 4.5 seconds to play. Jeremy Lade, or Opie as his teammates and friends call him, because of his resemblance to Opie Taylor of The Andy Griffith Show,1 pushed his way to the top of the key, 20 feet from the basket. Guarded by two opposing players, he threw up a shot. The buzzer went off as the ball soared through the air and banked off the glass and through the hoop. Pandemonium broke out in the gym. Teammates and fans rushed onto the floor and mobbed the game’s hero. The year was 2003, and the Rolling Warhawks of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) had won their fourth intercollegiate national basketball championship.
