Just Outside the Classroom

There are over 3.3 million public school teachers in the United States today. Just over half teach in elementary schools while the remaining teach in high schools. In addition, there are more than 235,000 school administrators, and over a quarter million teachers in private schools throughout the country. Add to these numbers about 1.2 million college professors and over a million men and women in education-related jobs in government, the private sector, and the military and you can see that education is one of the largest and most infl uential professions in the country (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2003).
