ABSTRACT

Most scientists who are employed as lawyers practice in the specialty of intellectual property law. According to the American Bar Association (ABA)’s section on intellectual property law, there are primarily four areas in which to work: patent, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Former researchers are primarily employed in patent law, helping to develop and license patents for scientific inventions. Other areas that employ lawyers with science and engineering backgrounds include environmental law and medical-device product-liability law.
