ABSTRACT

On May 20, 1939, the New York Amsterdam News featured a prominent photo of Hot Lips Page in the pages of their entertainment section (see photo pages). He was pictured wearing a smart checked suit, with his horn upraised, looking very much the man in form. He was thirty-one years old. The photo was captioned “Oran ‘Hot Lips’ Paige [sic] whose hot combination is drawing jitterbugs into the new Onyx Club in 52nd street. Paige was inactive for quite some time because of attempts to ‘freeze’ him out on the good bookings. However, he’s back in the business again and swinging on down.” 1
