ABSTRACT
In 1904 a South African student at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania sent home, to Sol Plaatje’s newspaper Koranta ea Becoana,1 a poem about Africa’s relationship with America. In its lines the old continent asks her black children on the other side of the Atlantic to return, so that they can bring light back to their “dark” homeland.
