ABSTRACT

Our analysis of ideology and politics has plowed some traditional ground. The Left believes in equality, and the further Left you go, the more government is needed to ensure equality. The Right believes that inequality is not only inevitable, but preferable. The further Right you go, the more government is needed to insure the rightful dominance of the few who deserve power, wealth, and status. Centrists are generally content with the status quo, which varies from era to era but can be characterized in our time as welfare-state liberalism. Centrists (or Moderates) advocate little more than a fine-tuning of current policy, based on close attention to popular demands.
